Is There a Tinder for Friends? Choose a Friendship-First Product or Community
Tinder can expand a social network, but it does not document a dedicated platonic matching mode.
Tinder's overview says people use it for dating, meeting new people, expanding a social network, or meeting locals while traveling, but Tinder does not currently document a separate platonic matching mode.
For friendship-only intent, use a product or community where that expectation is explicit. Bumble's current friendship product differs by region: the US moved to the standalone BFF app, while other regions may still use Bumble For Friends or BFF mode.
Can You Use Tinder to Find Friends?
You can state a platonic goal clearly, but other Tinder members may reasonably assume romantic or dating intent. Do not hide the mismatch.
If you try it:
- write “platonic friends only” near the top of the bio;
- name the activities or community you want;
- do not flirt and then retroactively call it friendship;
- confirm expectations before meeting;
- accept that a friendship-first service may have better intent alignment.
Tinder's Friends in Common feature is not friend matching. It shows a count of mutual contacts in selected markets when both daters opt in; it still appears within Tinder profile discovery.
Bumble BFF and Bumble For Friends
Bumble's current support documentation says:
- in the United States, the older Bumble For Friends and Bumble BFF mode moved to the standalone BFF app;
- outside the US, the new BFF app may not yet be available, and people may still use BFF mode or Bumble For Friends.
Check the official support page for your region instead of downloading whichever similarly named app appears first.
Activity-First Alternatives
The most useful “friend app” may be a repeated activity with a communication layer:
- recurring sports or walking groups;
- volunteer shifts;
- language exchanges;
- book, craft, game, or film clubs;
- alumni or professional communities;
- local event platforms and community calendars;
- classes that meet more than once.
Repeated contact makes it easier to move from one conversation to familiarity. Choose something you would enjoy even if no close friendship forms immediately.
Build a Friend Profile
Include:
- what you like doing with friends;
- how often you realistically meet;
- approximate area, without a home address;
- whether you prefer one-to-one or groups;
- one easy first plan.
Example:
New to east Oslo. Looking for platonic friends for Sunday walks, small concerts, and an occasional board-game night. I am free most second Saturdays; first meetup can be coffee in a public place.
Move to an Activity
After a reciprocal exchange, suggest a small, specific plan:
Want to try the public climbing session Saturday at noon? We can meet at reception and stay for an hour.
For a first meeting, use a public place, arrange your own transport, and tell someone where you are going. Friendship platforms still contain strangers.
