How Bumble Messaging Works With Opening Moves
Who can start, how the 24-hour timer works, and what Notes can—and cannot—do before matching.
Bumble Messaging in 30 Seconds
- A match normally has 24 hours for someone to start the conversation.
- When an Opening Move is present, a match can reply to it regardless of whose move it otherwise is.
- Women can set an Opening Move or send the first message; men can reply to a match's Opening Move or wait for her message.
- In same-gender and nonbinary connections, either person can message or respond to an Opening Move.
- Notes are pre-match messages, but a match is still required before chat begins.
Who Messages First on Bumble Now?
Bumble's current system combines its women-first rules with Opening Moves.
- Women can set an Opening Move and wait for a match to answer, or send the first message themselves.
- Men can answer a woman's Opening Move when one is available, or wait for her to message.
- In same-gender and nonbinary connections, either person can send the first message, answer an Opening Move, or set one.
This is more nuanced than the old slogan that “women always message first.” Check the live match screen: if an Opening Move is visible, Bumble says you can reply to it to initiate the conversation.
How to Set an Opening Move
Opening Moves are prompts that give a new match something specific to answer. Bumble allows up to three.
- Open the Chats tab.
- Tap Choose your Opening Move or Your Opening Moves.
- Choose a suggested question, write one, or add a supported photo with a caption.
- Edit or remove it later from the same area.
California accounts are currently required to have an Opening Move. Bumble says it may set a random one that can be updated.
Write an Opening Move That Produces an Answer
A useful Opening Move asks for a small, expressive choice:
- “Which neighborhood place would you take an out-of-town friend?”
- “What hobby could you teach badly but enthusiastically?”
- “Pick our low-stakes rivalry: window seat or aisle?”
Avoid questions that can be answered only with yes or no, demand personal information, or resemble a job interview. The goal is not to filter a stranger with one perfect question; it is to create an easy first exchange.
Why Bumble Matches Expire
Bumble says a match expires if no one sends a message within 24 hours. The match then displays a gray circle rather than the active yellow state.
Two features can change that timing:
- Extend adds 24 hours before expiration. Everyone receives one free Extend per day; paid plans allow unlimited Extends.
- Rematch restarts the 24-hour timer after a connection expires and is available with Boost and Premium plans.
Extending is useful when someone needs time. It is not evidence that either person is interested, busy, or ignoring the match. The timer reveals product state, not intent.
What Are Bumble Notes?
Notes, previously called Compliments, are short paid messages sent about a profile photo, prompt, or shared interest before matching. Bumble currently limits them to 150 characters.
A Note does not open a chat by itself. The recipient sees it with the profile, and both people must still match before ordinary messages can be exchanged.
Use a Note to add relevant context, not to bypass consent or move someone off-app:
Your ceramics photo looks like the exact point where confidence became chaos. What survived the kiln?
After the First Message
Continue the topic that started the match, then look for reciprocity rather than a magic message count. A useful exchange usually has both people answering and contributing new information.
When the conversation feels comfortable, make a specific but low-pressure suggestion:
I would continue this over coffee. Are you free Sunday afternoon?
If the answer is vague or absent, do not repeatedly push. One respectful follow-up can clarify; continued unwanted contact conflicts with Bumble's community expectations.
Safety and Evidence Limits
Stay on Bumble while getting to know someone, avoid sharing financial details or verification codes, and report requests for money or coercive behavior.
Do not use outgoing message counts to claim that a match replied, felt positive, or intended to meet. An export or screenshot missing the other person's side cannot establish those conclusions. More messages from you may mean engagement, but it may also mean several unanswered follow-ups.
