Hinge Notifications: Settings, Chat Alerts, and Fixes
Control push and email alerts, enable one important chat, and troubleshoot missing notifications.
Fix Hinge Notifications in This Order
- Check Hinge's Push Notifications settings.
- Check the operating system's notification permission for Hinge.
- Confirm New Messages is enabled if chat alerts are missing.
- Update the app, restart the phone, and test a stable connection.
- Reinstall Hinge if needed; removing the app does not delete the profile unless you choose Delete Account inside Hinge.
Manage Push and Email Notifications
Hinge provides separate controls for push notifications and emails:
- Tap the Photo icon at the far right of the navigation bar.
- Tap the Gear icon to open Settings.
- Scroll to Notifications.
- Open Push Notifications or Emails.
- Use the master toggle or adjust individual categories.
Hinge currently uses purple to indicate that a toggle is on. Tap Done on iOS or use the back arrow on Android to save.
The categories visible to you can change by platform, app version, and account. Use the current settings screen rather than relying on a fixed list from an older guide.
Turn On Notifications for One Hinge Chat
Hinge also supports chat-specific notifications. From a conversation, either tap the notification banner or open the three-dot menu and select Enable Notifications.
To turn them off, open the same menu and select Disable Notifications.
Hinge may send you to the phone's system settings to grant permission. If device-level Hinge alerts and the New Messages category are already enabled, the separate chat option may not appear because all messages are already covered.
Why Hinge Notifications May Not Work
A missing alert does not reveal what another user did. It is not reliable evidence of an unmatch, a hidden message, or an account penalty.
Common causes include:
- Hinge's in-app category is disabled;
- iOS or Android notification permission is off;
- Focus, Do Not Disturb, scheduled summaries, or battery restrictions delay alerts;
- background data is limited;
- the app is outdated or temporarily out of sync;
- the phone has a weak connection.
Start with settings before deleting anything. If messages appear when the app opens, the account data is probably intact and the delivery path is the more likely problem.
A Practical Troubleshooting Checklist
1. Check Hinge
Open Settings → Notifications → Push Notifications. Confirm the master switch and the relevant category, especially New Messages.
2. Check the Phone
On iPhone, open Settings → Notifications → Hinge. On Android, open the app information screen → Notifications. Allow notifications and review lock-screen, sound, and badge options.
Also check Focus or Do Not Disturb. Android manufacturers may place background or battery controls in different menus.
3. Refresh the App
Force-close and reopen Hinge, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, update the app, and restart the phone.
4. Reinstall Carefully
If the problem continues, reinstall the latest version. Hinge says removing the iPhone app does not remove the profile as long as you do not select Delete Account inside Hinge. Make sure you know the original login method before reinstalling.
5. Contact Hinge
Send support the phone model, OS version, Hinge version, approximate time of the missing notification, affected category, and the steps already tried. Screenshots of both Hinge and system settings can help.
Hidden Chats Are Not Deleted Chats
Hinge automatically moves matches with no activity for 14 days into a Hidden section. A hidden chat can be opened and unhidden, and it returns to the top when that match sends a new message.
That organization behavior can make a conversation feel missing, but it is different from an unmatch. Check the Hidden section before assuming the chat was removed.
FAQ
Can I enable alerts for only one match?
Yes. Hinge documents chat-specific notifications in the conversation's banner or three-dot menu.
Does a notification with no visible message mean someone unmatched?
Not necessarily. Notifications can be delayed or out of sync, and a push alert alone cannot prove what another user did.
Why is a chat no longer at the top?
Hinge says inactive matches can move to Hidden after 14 days. Open the Hidden section at the bottom of the Matches tab.
Will reinstalling delete my matches?
Removing the app should not delete the profile. Do not choose Delete Account, and sign back in with the original method.
