How to Use Hinge: From Profile Setup to a Real Conversation

What Makes Hinge Different?
Hinge profiles combine photos or videos, prompt answers, and personal information. Instead of swiping right on an entire profile, you send a Like to one specific photo or prompt and can attach a comment.
The app is free to use. Subscriptions add features such as unlimited Likes, broader access to incoming Likes, additional filters, and—on HingeX—higher Like placement and enhanced recommendations. Matching and messaging do not require a subscription.
1. Build a Profile Someone Can Respond To
A good profile answers three questions:
- What do you look like now?
- What is spending time with you actually like?
- What kind of connection are you looking for?
Use a clear solo photo early, show enough variety to make recognition easy, and remove images that are old, heavily filtered, or ambiguous. Hinge may require a clear face photo for age assurance in some regions.
Prompt answers work best when they contain a concrete detail. “I love travel” gives a visitor nowhere to go. “I plan trips around independent cinemas and regional pastries” creates two easy questions.
Keep dating intentions and relationship-type fields accurate. A polished profile cannot compensate for incompatible intentions hidden until later.
Hinge offers Prompt Feedback and Top Photo on supported accounts. Prompt Feedback gives suggestions; it does not write the final answer for you. Top Photo tests the first position among eligible photos. Neither is a guarantee of more matches.
2. Set Preferences Without Emptying the Feed
Preferences shape who appears in Discover. A Dealbreaker is stricter: Hinge says it tries to show only people who meet that preference.
Use Dealbreakers for genuine non-negotiables, not every mild preference. If Discover becomes too narrow, review distance, age, location, and Dealbreakers before assuming the account is broken.
Location is set manually in Hinge rather than continuously following the phone's GPS. Update it when you move or want to date in another area.
3. Use Discover
Tap the H icon to open Discover. Hinge says its recommendations reflect mutual preference fit: the profiles shown fit your settings and you fit theirs.
To send interest:
- Tap the Heart on a photo or prompt.
- Add a comment if there is a genuine observation or question.
- Tap Send Like.
To skip, tap X. You can undo only the most recent Skip when the undo arrow is available. Use the three-dot menu to Remove or Report a profile when a simple Skip is not appropriate.
Do not send a comment merely to satisfy a supposed algorithm rule. Relevant comments can make the first interaction easier, but no wording guarantees a response.
4. Understand Likes You, Roses, and Standouts
When someone Likes part of your profile, they appear in Likes You. Accepting creates a match and moves the conversation to Matches.
Free accounts can review incoming Likes one at a time, while paid access changes how the list can be viewed and filtered. Current limits and feature availability can vary; the in-app subscription screen is the source of truth for your account.
Standouts is a separate feed of profiles receiving attention that still meet your preferences. Sending interest there requires a Rose. Hinge provides one free Rose per week, and extra Roses can be purchased. A Rose improves placement in Likes You; it does not buy acceptance.
5. Start and Continue the Conversation
Once matched, open Matches and select the conversation. Hinge currently documents text, emoji, message Likes, and Voice Notes. It removed its in-app voice and video calling feature.
A useful first message continues the exact topic that created the match:
You mentioned ranking every ramen place in town. Which one would you defend in court?
Then trade enough information to establish interest and basic comfort. When the conversation is reciprocal, suggest a simple plan with a time window:
I am enjoying this. Want to continue it over coffee Saturday afternoon?
There is no universal message count that proves a conversation is “going somewhere.” The Hinge export also includes only your side of past conversations, so outside analysis cannot reliably label a match as responsive or interested from that file alone.
6. Manage Matches and Safety
- Hide organizes an existing chat without ending the match. Inactive chats may move to Hidden automatically after 14 days.
- Unmatch permanently removes the connection and conversation.
- Report is for harmful, deceptive, or prohibited behavior.
- Pause prevents the profile from being shown to new people while preserving existing chats.
Meet in public, control your own transportation, tell someone your plans, and avoid sharing financial details or verification codes. A Selfie Verified badge confirms a face comparison; Hinge says it is not a safety guarantee.
7. Decide Whether to Pay
Start free long enough to identify the actual bottleneck.
Hinge+ may help when limited outgoing Likes, viewing incoming Likes, or subscriber filters are genuinely constraining use. HingeX adds Priority Likes and Enhanced Recommendations. Neither tier fixes unclear photos, generic prompts, incompatible intentions, or conversations that never become plans.
Subscriptions renew unless canceled through the platform used to purchase them. Deleting the app or account is not the same as canceling billing.
